january favorites

I’m just going to warn y’all right now – I plan to be that person that posts about their monthly favorites during the next month. I never truly understood how bloggers and Youtubers talked about their monthly favorites during the featured month… what if all of a sudden on January 31st you totally break out from a product you’ve been using that month but already uploaded to your favorites to the world?! Okay, sounds pretty unlikely, but hey… you never know. I’m just trying to be honest as fudge here, kay?

Anyway, I’m not going to have any set categories for my monthly favorites – I plan to just see what I’m jivin’ with currently and go from there. And without further ado… here comes January!

Favorite Oscar Nominee – Lion

I have seen most of the “best picture” Oscar nominees, and the one that really got to me was Lion (with Moonlight trailing closely behind). Without giving away too much, Lion tells the story of a young man who has grown up in Australia after being adopted from his home of India at a very young age. This man, Saroo, spends his days researching every detail he can to try to re-connect with the home and dear family he left behind. I surely did not expect the heavy emotions this film portrayed – there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre. If you like family dramas or emotional tearjerkers, or if adoption is something close to your heart, Lion is a must-see… especially if you can get it for half-price on $6 Tuesdays at Sundance in Madison.

Favorite Podcast – Modern Love

source: NPR

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m currently going through a podcast phase. My job leaves me with a lot of time driving around alone, and the radio can get really old. I’ve been spending most of my days listening to shows like Girl Boss Radio and Adulting Made Easy by Real Simple, but I needed something different… you can only work on self improvement for so long before feeling like total shit. I did some extensive research (aka Google-ing “best podcasts”) and came up with Modern Love, produced by WBUR and The New York Times. Each show features a short essay read by a real human (I’m not sure what else would be reading it but let’s go with that) dealing with all aspects of love, relationships and life dramas. Some seem straight out of a Nicholas Sparks novel, but others are so down-to-earth I can’t help but relate. I’m only a few episodes in, but I’m totally hooked – and it’s FREE!

Favorite Book – The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes

Once upon a time in a far away land called *España* I found myself in the trendiest bookshop ever in life. D and I had discovered it in a little alley off the main shopping street, and we returned there many many times. At that little shop, D fell in love with The Monocle Guide to Better Living.  A few months later, when I looked it up to get for him for his birthday, I realized it wasn’t a lonely book… Monocole makes other books too! The cover of The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes was enough to draw me in, and the content it holds fits incredibly well with the hygge concept currently taking over Instagram (and my brain). Whenever I need a little inspiration or a break from reality, a few page flips of this book whisk me away.

Favorite Skincare Product – Josie Maran Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mist

I thought I loved everything Josie Maran until I picked up a Josie Maran value set last month with a bunch of products I’d never used. Now I know it’s not a love… it’s an obsession. First of all, let’s talk about the packaging. Most of her products have this GORGEOUS rose gold/pale coral/glass aesthetic that makes me want to buy it all just to decorate my bathroom cabinet. But also, the literal products… speechless. This Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mist came in the aforementioned kit, and it is a total winter-skin game changer. You spray it on your face (or soak a cotton pad and wipe it on your face) after cleansing before your next step of skincare (for me, that would be whatever serum I’m currently using) and it helps all your products really sink into the skin so you can soak up every last drop of hydration they provide. Like I said, game changer, ladies and gentlemen! Now, Josie Maran isn’t the most affordable skincare brand, but when you can grab her products in value sets, I highly suggest it!

Favorite Clothing Item – LC Lauren Conrad Runway Faux Suede Moto Jacket

You could say that I’m mildly obsessed with Lauren Conrad. When she announced her pregnancy, I legit shed a tear. I think her style and brand are so on point, and she is definitely someone I look up to. That being said, I can’t afford her designer line Paper Crown… but I can afford her line for Kohl’s! I have quite a few pieces from LC Lauren Conrad, and more recently she’s come out with LC Lauren Conrad Runway, which has a bit more expensive pieces that are great quality. This jacket was a crazy Black Friday find that my sister ended up getting me for Christmas. Originally $120, we found it on the clearance rack for $27.60, and it was my perfect size! Combined with her Kohl’s coupons, this gorgeous jacket ended up being a total steal. The burgundy suede is highlighted perfectly with rose gold accents, and is clearly the stand-out of any outfit I pair it with. Unfortunately it is sold out, but I trust she’ll be releasing a new collection of equally amazing pieces soon.

Favorite Home Decor – Threshold Copper Frame

I’d say my most-commonly-followed Insta accounts are interior design ones. I definitely know what I like, and my biggest dream is to design my own house (especially kitchen!) one day, but there’s one huge problem – my taste does not coincide with my budget. Luckily, my favorite store (Target, duh) has been amping up their home decor lines and has been totally rockin’ it. Their Threshold brand put out a ton of rose gold accessories for Christmas, and I was lucky enough to scoop up this frame on clearance for less than $10 – total steal. I love the simple lines and thin frame on the front, but the real showstopper is the triangle-shaped stand on the back. I’ve been considering displaying it backwards just to show it off. Okay no, I haven’t at all, but I know you totally thought I was serious, right?

What products have you been loving this January? Are you as obsessed with rose gold pieces as I clearly am? Oh, and happy February friends!

Hi! Can I comment if I’m not a blogger?? This is deanna. Ok yes to the podcast stuff I need good ones. I was listening to Weeds for a hot sec which was good. Just discussion of issues in society and mostly politics but truthfully I haven’t found it leans one way more than the other so I enjoyed it!
